I ran a free in-depth audit for a business owner yesterday. She had been posting three times a week for over a year. The grid was full. The effort was obvious. She was posting on her story. And if a stranger landed on that page cold, they would have had no idea what she sold, who it was for, or what to do next.
That’s not marketing. It’s a to do list she is checking off with nothing to show for it.
Most local business owners think of their Instagram page the way they think of a filing cabinet. You add things to it. It grows. That’s the goal. But a profile visit is not a moment to be filed for the person on the other side. It’s their first impression of you. And most pages fail that test in under ten seconds.
Here’s what I see almost every time I audit a local business page. The bio says something like “Mon-Sun 8am-2pm Downtown Millbrook Specialty Coffee Shop ↓” It doesn’t say who it’s for, what makes it worth visiting, or what someone should do right now. The grid is a mix of everything that got posted in the last year, with no visual thread and no clear signal about what this business actually stands for, is good at, or who their people are. The highlights are either empty or filled with “[insert emoji. especially a heart lol]” bubbles that haven’t been touched since 2022.
The blame here does not fall on the business owner or manager. Those people did their best to pick up advice from what they heard online, what they saw working for other people, and Meta telling them to pay to boost their post. So that’s what they do. Nobody told them that each individual post, the bio, the pinned posts, the highlights, all need to be set up to do a specific job before any of their content is turning viewers into customers.
[And they definitely weren’t ever told that “paid ads” are useless until their organic (unpaid content) is pulling its weight as a marketing strategy.]
The job of your page is to answer three questions in the first ten seconds: who you are, who you’re for, and what makes you worth getting in the car and coming out for.
Your bio is the only place on your profile that lets you say this directly, and most bios waste it. A location tag and a cute tagline don’t tell a stranger anything useful. The bio should name what you do, who it’s for, and give them a reason to keep looking. That’s it. You have 150 characters. Use them like they matter, because they do.
Your grid is a first impression, not an archive. When someone lands on your profile, they see nine squares. Those nine squares tell them whether your business looks like somewhere they’d go. Consistency in color, style, or format isn’t about “being”achieving an aesthetic”. It’s about being legible. A grid that looks like nine different businesses does not build trust. It creates digital overwhelm.
Your pinned posts and highlights are the most underused real estate on any local business page. Pinned posts let you put your three best, most representative pieces of content at the top of your grid permanently. For most businesses, that means one post that shows who you are, one that shows what you’re really good at, and one that tells an authentic story that people connect to. Highlights work the same way. They should answer the questions a new follower would actually ask: What is this place? What do you sell? What should I order? Why is it worth my money? Instead, most pages leave them empty, or fill them with expired promos nobody will ever open.
AND SO HELP ME… The fix is not a “rebrand”. It’s a fifteen-minute audit. Go to your own profile and look at it the way a stranger would, someone who has never heard of you and landed on your page from a reel. Ask yourself: do I know what makes this business better than their next door competitor? Do I know if it’s for my kind of people? Is it easy to make the next move (order, see the menu, directions) if I’m ready to hop in my car & try it out?
If the answer to any of those is no, that’s where to start. Before the next post. Before the next reel. Before you save yet another post that blew up on someone else’s page to a folder that you never look at again.
The girl who’s page I audited in the beginning of the story… I do these completely free. If you want someone with experience & expertise running your page audit, head to my Instagram and DM me the word AUDIT. I’ll pull up your page, look at it the way a stranger would, and send you back a full breakdown of exactly what’s working, what’s missing, and what to fix first. It’s specific to your business. No generic feedback.
I do a limited number of these and they go fast, so if you’ve been wondering what’s actually going on with your page, now’s the time.
Your content can only do its job (aka convince someone to buy) if the page it lives on is working (aka reaching new people, connecting with them on a human level, building trust, and leading to the sale). Fix the foundation first.
Love, Haley
